AWS Pours $6B Into New Malaysian Cloud Regions

Amazon Web Services is making the largest technology investment in Malaysia that the country has ever seen with plans to invest a total of $6 billion to build a new AWS Region

“This will be the largest international technology investment in the country to date, bringing the latest cloud technologies to our customers and helping them store data securely,” said AWS CEO Adam Selipsky on LinkedIn Thursday.

The Seattle-based worldwide cloud market-share leader is investing billions overseas each year to expand AWS’ cloud infrastructure and services footprint on a global basis.

This year, AWS opened a new AWS Region in Australia. In 2022, the company launched new cloud regions in India, Spain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. The cloud giant is planning to launch 15 more Availability Zones and five more AWS Regions in Canada, Israel, New Zealand and Thailand.

In total, AWS now has 99 Availability Zones across 31 geographic regions.

These zones place AWS infrastructure in locations that are far enough from each other to support customers’ business continuity but near enough to offer low latency for applications that use multiple Availability Zones.

AWS’ $6 Billion Investment In Malaysia

AWS has committed to invest $6 billion in Malaysia over the next 15 years.

The new AWS Malaysia Region will consist of three Availability Zones. These cloud regions will provide startups, developers and enterprises, as well as government and education organizations, greater choice for running their applications and serving end users from data centers based in Malaysia.

“The new AWS Region reflects our deep and long-term commitment to customers and organizations in Malaysia, as well as our commitment to serving sizable and fast-growing demand for cloud services across Southeast Asia,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS, in a statement.

Some of Malaysia’s top AWS partners include Axrail, eCloudvalley, Exabytes, G-AsiaPacific, GHL, Maxis, Silverlake Axis, Tapway, Uberfusion and Wavelet.

AWS 2022 Earnings

In 2022, AWS generated total revenue of $80.1 billion, representing a 29 percent annual growth rate.

Operating income at AWS in 2022 was $22.8 billion, compared with $18.5 billion in 2021.

As of fourth-quarter 2022, AWS had the largest cloud market share in the world, according to data from IT research firm Synergy Research Group.

Amazon, led by AWS, won 33 percent share of the global cloud services market in fourth-quarter 2022. Microsoft ranked No. 2 in cloud market share at 23 percent share in fourth-quarter 2022, followed by Google Cloud in third place at 11 percent market share.

Although Amazon is currently laying off 18,000 employees, AWS isn’t expected to see many employee layoffs.
